みく/Miku

We crammed it full of the various values of love.

inca un interviu [IMG]http://i644.pho
One day before the German J-Shock event, JaME had the opportunity to ask An Cafe a few questions.

Just like they did later at the concerts, An Cafe introduced themselves at the beginning of the interview in German. A nice start to our interview, that showed that the band had really put some thought into taking their first steps in Europe.

Hello and welcome to Germany! How are you doing?

Miku: Hello! The flight was rather boring, but it was okay, because I was sitting next to Satoshi, the singer of girugämesh and we talked about pretty much everything possible.

WhatÂ’s it like for you to perform for the first time in Europe?

Miku: We are really happy to be allowed to perform here. Also - the hall is quite big! When we got the invitation, we were already prepared for performances abroad, so the timing was absolutely perfect!

What expectations do you have of your performance at J-Shock and of your European fans?

Miku: Oh, I hope, that everyone will have just as much fun during the performance as we have!

After Bou left An Cafe, everybody assumed that you would of course get a new guitarist. What made you decide to also recruit a keyboard player for the band?

Teruki: The new guitarist is not a replacement for Bou, thatÂ’s for sure. Though, at first we were thinking that it would be sufficient to only get one new member in the band. Because we work with keyboard sounds, Miku came with the idea to also look for a permanent keyboard player to join the band, to become more professional musically.

So how did the fans react to Takuya and Yuuki?

Teruki: The fans found it hard to accept that Bou, one of our most important members, had left. ThatÂ’s why at first we got rather cold reactions. Because of our performances with Takuya and Yuuki and also because of their talent, they have accepted the two of them slowly, I think.

Takuya, is An Cafe your first band, or did you play in other bands before?

Takuya: My first real one, yes. In my high-school period I had a LÂ’arc~en~Ciel-cover band, but I guess that doesnÂ’t count.

A question to the ‘old’ members of the band – how did you get to know Takuya and Yuuki?

Miku: After Bou’s departure, we started an unofficial search for new musicians, we called several music schools and had people play for us. With both of their auditions it ‘clicked’ between us immediately and so we had them join the band.

On stage and during your promotion in general, you don’t use your real names. Kanon for example has picked his name from the manga “Maki Kusumuto Kiss”. Where do the other pseudonyms come from?

Miku: I derived my name kind of coincidentally from an actress. The others all use a part of their real name.

How did Donald Duck become your mascot and why did you dedicate a song (Duck no Magical Adventure) to him?

Miku: IÂ’ve been able to imitate his voice for quite some time and IÂ’ve done that constantly. And then the others came up with the idea to put that in a song.

Your album, Magnya Carta, will be available in Germany after June 26th. Have you planned any more European or Japanese releases for the near future?

Teruki: At the moment we have no other plans for European releases, but when Magnya Carta sells well enough over here, we will think about it more. In Japan we will release our new single Kakusei heroism ~THE HERO WITHOUT A 'NAME' on August 22nd.

What do you think about the fact that you became famous outside of Japan via the internet? Are streaming videos on YouTube for example, a problem for you?

Miku: IÂ’m happy that everybody is able to hear our music and see our videos!
Teruki: I took a look at YouTube myself and at first I thought that only Japanese fans would see the videos over there. Though now I know that a lot of our fans got to know us through video portals.

In early 2005 the band didn't have much success, and for a while you were considering disbanding. What made you decide to continue An Cafe?

Miku: Oh, you are very well informed! Yeah, we have thought of stopping, but it would be a pity – An Cafe is not only a band, but the Cafekko (the fans) and the band together. Also, the trouble with the self written songs would have been in vain…

Currently youÂ’re signed with the independent label Loop Ash despite the fact that youÂ’re very well-known. Do you like the role as an indies band or have you thought about signing with a major label?

Miku: We donÂ’t really care whether weÂ’re indie or major, but we like to be on Loop Ash, itÂ’s comfortable for us and we get along with the boss very well.

A lot of fans already know your music, but they havenÂ’t had the chance to get to know you beyond that through interviews. So, what do you think about each other?

Miku: Teruki is the daddy of the band, he is the serious one, but nevertheless he starts with a lot of passion on every project.
Kanon: Yes, he is somewhat like a brake, but in a positive way – with drastic ideas and before big decisions he hold us back and makes us think about everything one more time.
Takuya: He is very down to earth, so we donÂ’t have to worry a lot as a bandÂ…
Yuuki: Yeah, when something is simply impossible, Teruki clearly says ‘No!’.

Kanon: I would like to say something about Miku! Miku, he has a switch in his head. When he turns it on, he is motivated immediately, but it also gets turned off very quickly and then heÂ’s de-motivated.
Teruki: He has a grown-up and a rather childish side. Though he can take responsibility very well.
Yuuki: HmmÂ… He understands the feelings of other people well, and deals with it well.
Takuya: I think he has a good aura!

Teruki: Kanon is very artistic, he has many ideas. Takuya is a perfectionist. And he loves guitar!
Miku: Yuuki is really nice, I think that he also understands other people well and gets along with others.

Lastly, please give a message for your fans over here in Germany and in the rest of the world!

Teruki: I look forward to the show a lot, and I think that we are already set to return!
Miku: Yeah, the same for me – and I would like to say that I love the German Cafekko just as much as our Japanese fans! Ah, an international fan club would be cool, right?
Kanon: I love you!!
Yuuki: Finally weÂ’re here, I have been looking forward to this for a long time!
Takuya: I hope that we will not only see you tomorrow, but again in the future!

Before the show in Anaheim, JrockRevolution.com had the opportunity to chat with Antic Cafe about their world tour. An Cafe is:

Miku (VOX), Takuya (Guitar), Kanon (Bass), Yuuki (Keys) Teruki (Drums)

JRR: Is this your first time touring the US?
Miku: Yes, it's our first time touring.

JRR: How long has it been since you've been on this tour?
Miku: Umm 14… Oh what am I saying, it's been 24 days. So we've been touring for almost a month.

JRR: What do you think about the weather in Los Angeles?
Miku: I like it, not too hot not too cold. It's very easy going I can just grab one jacket and head out. I like the weather.

JRR: Well in Japan, I'm imagine the cherry blossoms are in full bloom during this time of year but do you guys miss home at all? Like the food, etc.
Miku: Yeah I miss it a lot, I want to go home!
JRR: What specifically do you miss? I, personally, miss Japanese food...
Miku: Umm, not specifically food but I miss my dog Nyappy. I'm sad I can't see him.

JRR: I'm going to change the topic to music; are there any American artists that have had an influence on you?
Teruki: (looking at Takuya) Seems like you'd have a lot!
Takuya: I listened to Linkin Park when I was in high school.
Teruki: Coincidentally, a Linkin Park song was playing while we were getting food yesterday. And we were like, "Wow, how long ago did this song come out?"

JRR: Oh, which song was it?
Teruki: It was from their first album that got them really popular. I think we're all listening to American music in Japan without knowing it, well at least the popular stuff. In that sense, even if we don't know whether the song is by an American artists/band, we've been hearing a lot of American music without knowing it.

JRR: And it's naturally influenced your music?
Teruki: Well, it's not like we directly listen for and have specific American artists that we respect but I think all popular music in Japan has a lot of influences.

JRR: Was there an artist, not specifically American, but any artists that you listened to when you were younger that have inspired you?
Miku: Hmm when I was younger... I listened to Wink (Japanese pop act).
Teruki: I started really liking music during my junior high years and Tetsuya Komuro's music was very popular back then, so I'm sure that had an impact on me.
JRR: What can you say is the best part of your live performance that no other band has?
Miku: I'd say our power to make people happy. I don't think anyone can beat our ability to put a smile on people's faces!

JRR: Are there differences in the reactions between Japanese fans and American fans at your shows?
Miku: This is only a guess, but I'd say our fans overseas have a greater reaction… they want to show themselves more.

JRR: Were you aware that J-Rock was so popular overseas in America and in Europe, etc. before you went on tour?
Miku: I wasn't too aware of that so I'm very surprised at the current situation!

JRR: Have you had some free time to go sight seeing or go shopping at all since you've arrived in Los Angeles?
Miku: We landed here yesterday afternoon so we've had a bit of free time until last night.

JRR: What sort of places did you go?
Miku: Macy's store...? No, I went to the small discount shops across from the Macy's and I've walked down this street (Beverly Blvd).
Teruki: I went out with Takuya and our staff last night to Guitar Center. There were some stores that were already closed in that area but we checked out the ones that were open.
JRR: Was it the Guitar Center in Hollywood?
Teruki: Yes, we took the bus out there.

JRR: Aren't there a lot of guitar/music shops in that area?
Teruki: Yes there were! I was very surprised. Oh, and there were handprints of famous musicians outside of the Guitar Center.
Miku: Oh don't they have B'z handprints there...

JRR: Oh really?
Teruki: There were other Japanese musicians there too! Hmm I can't remember who…but there were at least 2 pairs of hand prints who were obviously Japanese musicians'.
Staff: B'z is quite well known around the world…
Teruki: It seemed like that wasn't the case for these musicians, I don't know if they're known at all in Japan. I'm guessing they may be Japanese musicians who started their career out here in America?! I put my hands in Terry Bozzio's handprints.

JRR: Did you purchase anything?
Teruki: Yes, I bought a little something. I found a type of snare wire for my snare drum that's not very common in Japan…I was like "what's this?!" so I went ahead and bought it.

JRR: Do you have certain things about your instruments that you're picky about?
Takuya: I'm not very picky, I'm open to new things and like to try them out.
Miku: (looks at Yuuki) No keyboards that are over 10,000 yen!
JRR: Is there something in particular that you'd like to do while you're in Los Angeles?
Miku: I'd like to have Japanese food.

JRR: Please share some stories of interesting locations or events that have occurred so far on this tour.
Miku: Personally, I was really moved by the fans in Argentina… There was a cafekko (An Cafe Fan) that made towels for us and had a big card full of messages. Geographically, Argentina is on the opposite side of the Earth from Japan so it was very touching to see that.

Kanon: It was wonderful seeing the fans in Moscow yell "Arigato! Arigato!" in Japanese.
Teruki: It made it even more touching that their Japanese wasn't very fluent... it showed that they were trying hard to learn to communicate with us.
Yuuki: The air in Mexico was memorable...
JRR: How so Yuuki?
Yuuki: The air was very thin, and it got difficult to breathe even after moving a little bit.
JRR: Was it because of the altitude?
Yuuki: Yes, we performed in that environment; we had to use oxygen tanks during our show.

JRR: You are all from different areas in Japan, how did you all meet?
Miku: with an electronic marquee...
(Everyone): Electronic Marquee?!
Miku: Just kidding, I put an ad on the Internet.
Teruki: I saw the ad in a studio and I contacted them.

JRR: I'm sure your lives center around music, but is there anything other than music that you're passionate about? Any hobbies?
Miku: Hmmm other than music... I like fighting games! Especially Tekken. I have a PS3 and I've been playing online. Yuuki: I enjoy going to arcades. Other than that I like manga…

JRR: Manga, like which ones?
Yuuki: One Piece, Death Note, Bleach etc.
Takuya: I enjoy watching American dramas, like Prison Break.
Teruki: I don't have a hobby in particular, but when I get a few days off I like to travel.

JRR: The WBC (World Baseball Classics) was very exciting for Japan, but were you able to watch it at all?
Teruki: Yes, it was very exciting!
Takuya: I wanted to go see it but we couldn't because of our tour.

JRR: Anything you would like to say to your fans overseas?
Miku: We are so happy to see so many cafekkos waiting for us around the world! I'm sure you are excited, so we will give you a show that is far beyond your imagination before returning to Japan. We'll do it!

An Cafe made their overseas debut appearance at the anime convention A-KON in Dallas, Texas, USA the first weekend of June. Even though the band did not perform, they received a great big welcome from their American fans. The band participated in two autograph sessions and a Fan Question & Answer panel.

First of all, please introduce yourself to our readers who may not know you yet.

Miku: I am the vocalist, Miku, and my main hobby is cooking.
Kanon: I’m the bassist, Kanon, and my hobby is watching anime.
Teruki: I’m the drummer, Teruki, and my hobby is watching the sunset.

An Cafe is known as an Oshare kei band, meaning your looks are colorful, cute, and youthful. What made you decide to have this visual appearance?

Miku: When we started doing lives, there were many bands with different types of appearances. We liked the style of the Harajuku area, so we decided to go with that type.

Considering your name in romaji is spelled as “antikku koohiiten”, how did "an cafe” come about?

Miku: When you translate ‘koohiten’ it means ‘cafe’.

The theme of ‘cafe’ is used, not only as the band’s name, but also for your fans and your management; your fans are ‘Cafekko,’ meaning ‘Cafe children,’ and your management is known as “Red Cafe”; why the theme of ‘cafe’?

Teruki: When we had our first live, we kind of had a theme of a cafe.
Miku: Our former member, Bou, was into horseracing and there was a horse named ‘Manhattan Cafe’ and he wanted the same name for the band. The rest of us thought ‘no, that’s not a good idea’ (laugh). So we changed it and now it has become ‘An Cafe’, but actually there was no special relationship to cafes, it just happened that way.

Miku, you use a lot of interesting words such as ‘nyappy’, ‘tiramisu’, and ‘poppoo’ for example; how did you come up with these words and when are they mostly used?

Miku: Every word has a meaning, so we’ll start with ‘nyappy’. We want to make it a world standard language and it’s used to communicate among the Cafekko, who are the fans, and us. For instance, if we meet up in Harajuku, they’ll say ‘nyappy’ and we’ll respond with ‘nyappy’. ‘Tiramisu’ means ‘have a nice day’ (laugh). ‘Poppoo’ comes from ‘hato’ [translates to ‘dove’], which is a symbol of peace and ‘poppoo’ is the sound a dove makes.

Kanon, who are some of your musical influences and how have they influenced your songwriting?

Kanon: The type of music I would listen to when I was young was Mr. Children. As I got older, I listened to other bands such as Glay and Fuji Fabric.
Miku: (Teasing) They helped with the music, melody... (Everyone laughs.)
Teruki: The rhythm patterns. (Everyone laughs.)

Kanon, yesterday during the autograph session, a fan asked you to sign her bass; how did you feel about that?

Kanon: I was very honored to be signing her bass, and at the same time it was kind of a reminiscence of when I was a fan and had that same kind of feeling.

Teruki, you were previously in a band named Feathers-blue; how is An Cafe different from that band?

Teruki: The main difference is the relationship between the band members. In my former band, we would have one member who would decide everything. He would do all the song writing and everyone else would follow, whereas in An Cafe we have a more liberal atmosphere where everyone gets to choose what should be done as a band.

You’ve modeled for various brands, such as Sex Pot Revenge and Angelic Pretty; how did you get these opportunities?

Miku: Those brands are from Harajuku and since we have the same Harajuku image, somewhere between Gothic Lolita and the punk fashion, they found us and we eventually started working together.

You have a young audience, such as those from Harajuku. Why did you decide to target this specific audience?

Miku: In the Visual kei scene, there are people who are more into the dark and gothic stuff, and there are also fans of Harajuku pop-y stuff, which is a scene we could relate to more. Since we chose to be more on the popular side, we thought the same type of fans would follow us.

What process do you have when creating your songs, from lyrics to music and arranging to recording?

Teruki: One thing I noticed when I was talking to some other musicians is that we spend more time creating just one song. For instance, when we come together to write a song, he [points to Miku] has his say of how he wants to make it, but at the same time everyone else has their opinion too. We spend so much time in the writing process before going into the actual recording.

Even though you all have different opinions, do you come to a compromise or does someone eventually step down from his opinion?

Teruki: I guess you could call it a compromise, but it’s not actually a compromise; it’s more about the teamwork. For instance, Miku and I do get into arguments quite often, but having said that, I do respect what Miku says. So within the conversation, if it happens to go Miku’s way, I still respect that.

In 2003, your single Candy Holic ranked the second best seller on the Oricon Indie charts; how did it feel to have something like this happen at such an early point in your career?

Miku: I was surprised! I couldn’t believe that it went into #2. Maybe because I was foolish or maybe because I assumed I knew a lot about Visual kei, but I thought ‘this is easy’. Then the single afterwards didn’t go high in the charts, so I realized we have to do things seriously.

The line-up of the band has changed and with two new members joining the band, will the sound of the band change too?

Miku: We won’t go far off from the former An Cafe sound, but surely with the two new members there will be slight changes in the sound. Also, we want to respect what Takuya and Yuuki have to offer and maybe create a new feeling within the band.

Was Yuuki already taking care of the keyboards before officially joining the band?

Teruki: He had just been playing classical piano and doesn’t have much of a career as a keyboardist in a band.

You made a movie Kyu~bonds, which was a bonus included in your photo book; did you write the plot yourselves? How did you come up with this idea for the movie?

[The band members talk and laugh amongst themselves when they can’t exactly remember their memories.]
Miku: We wrote a little of the plot. When we were visiting various cities in Japan we thought of the word ‘bonds’, to have bonds with somebody else. So we thought we should make a movie about the actual bond that people share and to have a bond with everybody. We made the movie and went all over to shake hands with people.
Teruki: During that trip as a token to show the bond between everybody, we passed on red wristbands to everyone there. So we and the fans wear the wristbands all the time.

Do you have any plans to make another movie?

Teruki: We would love to make another one with our new members and we want to spread out with the bonds with people not only in Japan, but all over the world.

Some of your PVs are rather funny such as the one of Maple Gunman in which you dress up in various costumes like a dog or a police officer. Do you come up with these ideas yourself?

Kanon: The idea for Maple Gunman came from Miku when he said “the keyword is ‘gunman’, which means ‘gun’, which means ‘policeman’”. Then we thought about making a police story. [Miku hums a part of the tune.] And during the part Miku’s humming, he wanted someone to get arrested. (Everyone laughs.)

You had a monthly internet radio show called “Radio Cafe”; do you still have this show? What are several reasons for having it? Do you think it makes you closer to your fans?

Teruki: We’re still doing that radio show, but since we’ve been on tour we haven’t been able to do it for two months.
Miku: If I had somebody I liked, I would want to listen to that person’s radio show since it would make me feel closer to them. Just hearing that person’s voice close to me would make me feel as if we were physically close to each other. In that sense, I want that feeling to be the same between our fans and us.
Teruki: Miku and I have a different radio program called ‘Neo ID’, which is once a week. The listeners send in their problems, which is then discussed between the two of us. There are several other corners of the show that are quite interesting, but I guess having these fans actually send in their thoughts to us and to be able to communicate is the most interesting, especially if they have problems where the both of us answer with a different thought. And sometimes we get in an argument during the show. (Everyone laughs.)

Even though you didn’t perform at A-KON and weren’t able to see how your overseas fans react to your music, how does it feel meeting them here in the USA for the first time?

Miku: At first, my perception of the fans was different. I thought that the people here would think that we were part of an anime or part of some sort of character, but when we actually meet the fans, they really cared about us and we could feel that they had been waiting for us. I felt honored.

At the Fan Question & Answer panel, did you expect the fans to be so bold with their questions?

Teruki: I was surprised to see them so enthusiastic.
Miku: We were very nervous and with the fans coming up with such questions, it helped us to become more relaxed. So we want to thank the fans for that.
Teruki: In Japan, we’re known as ‘anything goes with An Cafe’, so even if we’re meeting the fans or if we’re just on our own, there is no difference. We can talk about anything in a very natural mode.

Now that you know you have a lot of American fans, are you planning to do more things in the USA, such as distribute your releases, sell your merchandise or even open an international fanclub?

Miku: So far we don’t have a specific plan, but we do want to do it. Since we’ve seen the fans now, we need to talk about it more seriously.

At the end of June, you are having your first live performance in Germany. Are you excited about the show? Are there any expectations or worries you might have?

Teruki: I’m sure we’ll face the language barriers, but since there will be four bands that will be performing that night and amongst all the Visual kei bands, we stand in kind of a unique position. Not just with our music, but also with our style and with that we want to be able to express both these aspects of An Cafe’s uniqueness. There are several parts in our performance other than the actual performing such as the MC. That’s an easy format that can be used to introduce what sort of personality we have, but in this case it will be difficult due to the language barrier. So with this we want everyone to have fun with the music.

For fun and on a more personal note, say something about the band member to your left.

Teruki: Miku’s a mixture of a child and an adult. He’s very pure when he’s listening to music, but at the same time as an adult he’s very professional. I always wanted to play in a Visual kei band, but we wanted to have something different. Miku was able to bring that difference from other Visual kei bands in terms of how he writes his lyrics, the way he performs live, and by the way he looks. The whole uniqueness of Miku is very unique. (Everyone laughs.)
Miku: Kanon’s usually quiet. (Everyone laughs.) When we really need his help, he’s “the man”; he’s a trustworthy person. For instance, when all the members had a cold and we weren’t doing so well at a live, he would think “I need to help the band move forward” and he would help out in doing that. So he’s a very reliable person that we can trust.
Kanon: Teruki’s the perfect figure of a serious person, and he’s also always worried about many things. If we lose Teruki of Antic Cafe, we will not be able to go on as Antic Cafe.

Thank you for your time and please give a final message for your fans.

Teruki: Music can be a universal and global language. Of course there is the language barrier, but music itself can cross over to anywhere. This time, I realized that the visuals can be the same as well; when people have seen how we look, we can be connected to those people. We want to spread the word of ‘being An Cafe’ with the whole total visuals and images as well as the music.
Miku: Until I came to America, I hadn’t been thinking about doing anything abroad, but having now been here, I was so moved that there were fans actually waiting for us. That has completely changed my mind, in the writing process of my future lyrics. Until now, when I had been writing lyrics, I wasn’t the type to be very open-minded to others or a talkative person to express such feelings towards the fans or listeners who have had the same feelings. Now, I will try to do that not only for the Japanese fans, but everybody. Although there is a language barrier, I will try as much as possible to share that feeling with everyone in the world with even a gesture or anything.
Kanon: Where ever you are in the world, An Cafe and Cafekko, we’re all family! (Everyone laughs.)

va pun 2 ok?

The J-Shock 2007 was a big event which will remain in the memories of all those who participated in it. It was a busy day for all four bands and so we didn’t get personal interviews but nevertheless, they still could spare some time afterwards to answer our questions per mail. We’d like to thank Gan-Shin Records once more for offering the mail-interviews and of course also the bands for taking the time to answer and the translator for the translations.

Nippon Project: In America you only had a signing session and a Questions & Answer - how was it for you now to have a real concert overseas?
An Cafe: The fans were more enthusiastic than Japanese fans and that made us feel really happy, and we didn’t want to go back to Japan.

We saw you watching bis’ show. When you saw how the German crowd reacted to a Japanese band, did this help you to calm down?
We felt the need to compete and the necessity to rock the house much harder.

Do you intend to come to Europe again in the future? Maybe also to Switzerland?
We'd love to, please invite us!

Did you know any of the other bands that performed at the J-Shock before?
We had played with them in Japan in the past. We even went drinking with them.

What do you want to give to the audiences when you are doing a concert? How would you like them to feel after your concerts?
We want to see everyone smiling. We want everybody to be happy.

Takuya and Yuuki, how was it for you to play one of your first concerts overseas?
Yuuki: I was nervous to face such a big stage. But in return, the enjoyment was extreme.
Takuya: Playing in Germany itself was already special to me, but I tried to give my best while playing as I would in Japan, and enjoyed it the most possible.

Teruki, we noticed that you wore some kind of a bandage on your right arm. Were you injured?
Teruki:I had been suffering an inflammation of the tendon sheath since last Summer. But I am ok now.

Who told you about Atze?
We've heard about it from an interviewer on the day before the show.

Miku, how did you get the idea for your magic trick? (The one with the underwear)
Miku: I've got the idea from Esper Itoh, a Japanese comedians' performance.

Does Panda-chan (the one you had attached to the microphone holder) have a name?
Miku: I've got it from a fan just before the show so I couldn't think of a name yet.

Yuuki, were you shocked when one part of your keyboard fell down? Was it less or more shocking when it happened for the second time?
Yuuki: I really panicked the first time, but it turned to be amusing the second time.

Kanon, did it hurt much when you hit your head on the microphone holder?
Kanon: I was really into the performance and didn't realize it.

Miku, has it ever happened to you that you accidentally hit somebody while you were doing your microphone holder choreography?
Miku: I broke Kanon's bass once.

All of your English and German MCs were really well pronounced. How long did you practice?
A bit on the day before the show. Maybe for 30 seconds?

Miku, did you like the German sausages?
And to all of you: Is there other food you’ve tried in Germany?
Miku: It was a bit too soft.
All: We also had Wiener Schnitzel!

Did you go sightseeing? What have you visited?
Kölner Dom!! It was amazing!

When did you notice that a keyboarder would just fit perfectly into An Cafe’s sound?
We strongly felt it when we were making the "Magnya Carta" album.

How did you get to know the two new members?
It was fate.

Takuya and Yuuki, how did you get to know about An Cafe? And what was your motivation to join the band?
Takuya & Yuuki: We weren't aware of the band until we were asked to join. We listened to the songs and decided to join.

Takuya, you’re the youngest member in the band - how does it feel to be in such a successful band at this age?
Takuya: It still feels unrealistic. I'll just do the best of what I can.

On you latest album “Magnya Carta” you’ve created the Nyappy Kingdom and your own characters within that kingdom. Will you continue with that theme?
It was intended to suit the theme of "Magnya Carta" so we're not sure if we’ll keep the same idea in the future.

Will there ever be a villain in your Nyappy Kingdom? How would you deal with him?
I like that idea. Can I use it?
Yes, of course!

Takuya and Yuuki, how do you feel about performing songs which were already written “before your time”?
Takuya & Yuuki: We like the songs so performing them makes us happy.

Were your worried that, after Bou had left An Cafe, your fans might not accept any new band members?
We did have fears. We've decided in consideration of each other that we just have to do our best, and show that to the others. We hope that the fans will understand us if we keep on writing good songs and doing good live shows.

Yuuki, how do you get your hair so curly and manage them to even stay curly during the whole concert? Please tell us your curly-hair-styling-secret~
Yuuki: Top sercret!

Kanon, you’re the main composer for An Cafe’s songs - where do you take your inspirations from?
Kanon: I get inspired when seeing my figure dolls.

Can you tell us a funny or strange story about the creation of a song?
Kanon: I don't have one...

Miku, what was your reaction when you heard of Kagerou’s disbanding? Did it have some kind of impact on your life?
Miku I was really sad. But now I’m happy to know that Daisuke, the vocalist, has started a new band.

Which song defines, in your opinion, An Cafe’s concept the most? Why?
Smile Ichiban Ii ♀ (onna): The fans are smiling when we play this live. Positive power!!
BondS -Kizuna-: Because we treasure the bonds between the members, staffs and the fans.

There’s quite some confusion about your band name. Is there a correct spelling?
In Japan, "アンティック-珈琲店-" (That means “Antic Cafe”. “Antic” is written as “antikku” while "Cafe" is written as "Coffee Shop" in Chinese characters.)
Oversesas, "An Cafe"

While watching your movie “BondS”, we noticed that there are quite some elements that remind us of the movie “NANA”. Have you watched that movie or are the similarities sheer coincidence?
Yes, we've seen it. It's an homage to the film.

Kanon, you’ve got most of the time the role of an otaku - how much are you one?
Kanon: (makes the infinity sign) ∞ - infinite

What would you be doing now if you weren’t musicians?
Kanon: Waiter at an internet café
Yuuki: Clerk at a game arcade
Takuya: Office worker
Teruki: Working at Tohoku Electric Power *
Miku: homeless...

* Note from the translator: Teruki lived in the northern region, and Tohoku Electric Power is a major company in the region. (Website of Tohoku Electric Power)

What’s the biggest dream for each of you?
Kanon: To receive an MTV award for our video clips
Yuuki: To carry on An Cafe!!!
Takuya: A world tour
Teruki: To continue playing music for the rest of my life
Miku: To achieve the #1 place on ORICON *

* Note from the translator: "ORICON" is the most well known music trade magazine in Japan, similar to the "Billboard" magazine in the US. (ORICON website, singles charts (English), album charts (English))

Could you please give us a message for your Swiss fans?
We would love to play a live in Switzerland so please invite us! NYAPPY (≧∀≦)

next [IMG]http://i644.pho [IMG]http://i644.pho
An Cafe first came to the United States in June of 2007 to visit A-kon in Dallas, Texas. Although Nippon Project didn’t have a chance for an interview at that point in time, we were able to make it to Fanime Con in May of 2008, near the end of Antic Café’s first world tour, “Nyappy Go Around the World”.

Nippon Project was given the opportunity to have a brief, private session, with this Oshare Kei group before their Q&A Panel on May 26th.

How does it feel to be successfully completing your first world tour?

Teruki: It’s been a really great experience and it’s been a long trip. But it was really good for us because we couldn’t have it before. We’re very happy.

Could all of you share some good or bad experiences over the past few months?

Kanon: In Paris when I was taking a shower, warm water wouldn’t come out. The water was really cold.

Miku: Oh! We went on a red bus and we were prohibited to do the Number 2 on the tour bus, but we did it anyway.

Teruki: I don’t know whether to call it a good or a bad experience, but at a live, a fan grabbed me (laughing)

(The members of An Cafe talk amongst themselves and laugh as they recall an experience)

Miku and Teruki share the story together: In Germany after a live, one girl was saying “Oh hi! Hello!” And it was natural to think that she was staff but after time passed we thought,
“You’re not staff are you?” and then everyone realized she wasn’t staff so she had to leave.

Miku: It’s been a good experience. And we also shot the first photo album for our book “Antic Café Shashinshu” in Europe

Any idea as to when it’s going to be released?

(All the members look around at each other questionably and Miku and Teruki share a word before Teruki answers)

Teruki: End of June or early July

Is there anything that you really wanted to do or experience but didn’t have the chance due to time restraints?

Teruki: We don’t usually have a shake hand session along with the concert, but we do that in Japan. We didn’t really have time for it here though . . . so we’re upset about that.

What’s going to be the first thing you do when you get home?

Yuuki: Eat a good meal. I want a lot of white rice.
Miku: I want to see my puppy, Nyappy.
Takuya: There’s a restaurant called Matsurai Japan and I want to go.
Kanon: Shopping
Teruki: Even when we go back to Japan there’s the Korean live; so we only get one day in Japan. And already we’ve booked a rehearsal studio and a meeting for the one day we will be home.

So far while you were here, have there been any fans that stand out in your memories?

Teruki: There was someone who cosplayed as me. That was very memorable.
Miku: There was someone from a-kon that I met last time and I was very happy to see her again.

(Kanon sits in thought as we all watch him and laugh as a full minute goes by before Teruki and Miku intervene)

Teruki and Miku: There was a fan that already came to see us in Tokyo. The person went shopping in Harajuku and spoke really good Japanese and it was funny to see him.
Kanon: That was memorable to me too.

There were quite a few people who cosplayed as each of you. Is there anyone that you have ever wanted to cosplay as?

Miku: One guy today was cosplaying as Bou. That was really interesting . . .

(An Cafe talk amongst themselves for a few moments and start pointing around at each other, somehow launching everyone in to a Sailor Moon cosplay frenzy)

Miku: I want to cosplay Sailor Moon!

(Everyone laughs and the members begin to discuss who would make the perfect Sailor Scout cosplays)

Miku and Teruki point at Yuuki: Venus!!

Miku: Takuya would be Mercury

Kanon would be Mars!

(All the members laugh at Kanon through his seriousness of the topic)

Then Teruki would be Jupiter? . . .

Teruki: Ah!!

(All the members laugh about how in Japan, Jupiter is thought of as the ugliest of the members)

I think Teruki would make a very good looking Jupiter!

Teruki: Thank you!

(Everyone laughs and continues on the topic briefly)

And now, an ending comment?

(Miku swishes water around his mouth and everyone laughs at him as he zones out completely, he then thinks for a moment after the question was repeated)

Miku: This was our first overseas tour . . . We never tried it before so it’s been difficult, but it’s been a very rare and good experience. We would like to keep working together and enjoying with everyone.

During their European tour, we asked the cheerful An Cafe a number of questions submitted by their fans.

One hour before their show in Bochum, Germany, we met up with An Cafe. It was the fifth concert within their NYAPPY GO AROUND THE WORLD tour through Europe and the five members seemed rather relaxed and satisfied. When we explained to them that the German JaME team collected questions from fans for this interview, and that we would ask them these questions now, the calmness was gone, because the musicians were really curious about what the fans wanted to know from them...

Your tour schedule is rather tight. Do you have time to relax or walk through the various cities at all? (Jasmin)

Teruki: We usually have a day off after three shows, on days like this we can do sightseeing and get to know the city we're in. Lately we wanted to do something in Hamburg, but it was really cold, so we didn't go too far!

What did you expect in relation to Germany? (Nathalie & Roxani)

Teruki: We already knew more or less what would await us, after we played at J-SHOCK in Germany last year. We gained some experience: We noticed in particular that for example the fans welcomed us very enthusiastically and that they danced a lot, we looked forward to that before we started this tour.

Now that you touched on that subject - did you notice that Para Para/ Furitsuke is by now pretty common overseas? (Christina)

Miku: It seems like Para Para is primarily popular in Germany, we definitely noticed that especially here fans imitate this Japanese dance style.

How did you choose your band name? (Sally-Marie)

Miku: Our former bandmate Bou is a big horse-racing fan. When we thought of a name, we definitely wanted to include the word "Cafe", because Bou's favourite horse was called "Manhattan Cafe". Our name evolved from this.

Which An Cafe songs do you like the most? (Milou)

Yu-ki: My favourite song is called Wagamama Koushinkyouku.
takuya: Snow Scene!
kanon: I like Lock On The New Sekai.
Miku: Like kanon! Lock On The New Sekai.
Teruki: Tekesuka Kousen.

Why are you releasing your new album in Europe first? (Roxani)

Miku: Our European tour was accelerated, so it seemed reasonable to us to release the album in Europe first, and then in Japan. So this album belongs to our tour somehow.

How do you get the ideas for your shows on stage? Especially this hammer-thing? (Virginie) (note: Hitting fans with a big plastic hammer is a common practice in An Cafe concerts in Japan)

Miku: I use the hammer to hit our fans (smirks).
Why do you do that?
Miku: I think it's a nice idea! But in fact i stole it from someone else... (laughs)

What was the most beautiful moment you ever experienced during a concert? (Franziska)

Teruki: Well, for me it's always great when Miku lets the fans sing and I can hear them.

Do you think you are an Oshare Kei band? (Ania)

Miku: People call us and our style Oshare Kei, but we personally don't think that we are like that. We have a different concept, I'd call it "Harajuku Rock Kei." We prefer this description.

Yu-ki, why did you choose an extraordinary styling like that? (Jana)

Yu-ki: I imagined a styling that'd be really awesome, and this is what came out of it... (He smiles, while the others burst out laughing)

kanon, you played an otaku in your movie. How much of this character are you in real life? (Jana)

kanon: (He thinks for a long time) Well, that's how I am - I am an otaku. (The others laugh)

How did the photo shoot with Miku, Tatsuro and Ryutarou in
Shoxx Vol. 180 (February 2008) happen? (Bettina)

Miku: On New Year's Eve a big concert called Over the Edge '07 took place at Shibuya C.C. Lemon Hall. Amongst others MUCC, Plastic Tree and An Cafe performed there and in the end the pictures accrued in line with that.

Which fan presents make you happy? (Laura)

takuya: I like fan letters, because they are usually very affectionate.
kanon: Cigarettes! (laughs)

Please say something about the person who's next to you! (Sarah)

Teruki (About Miku): Miku is excellent! He is mature but at the same time also childish. Well, I think he has got a child's heart but also the mentality of an adult.
Miku (About kanon): In my opinion kanon is very calm and oversees everything well. He is like a Tibetan monk!
Kanon (About takuya): I think takuya is very masculine! (Everyone laughs when kanon shows his muscles to demonstrate his manliness)
takuya (About Yu-ki): Yu-ki is a very honest and friendly person. Well, he doesn't look like that, but he really is! (laughs)
Yu-ki (About Teruki): Teruki is like the manager or father of our band. He organizes a lot for us.

Do you have any idols? Or someone you admire very much? (Carina)

An Cafe: There are lots of musicians we love and adore, but it's difficult to name any idol in particular.

What did you do before you formed An Cafe? (Franziska)

Yu-ki: I was a student.
Teruki: Actually Yu-ki studied music!
takuya: I was also a student.
kanon: I worked as a paper delivery boy (laughs).
Miku: I visited a university, so I was also a student.
Teruki: I played in another band before.

If you weren't famous, what job do you think you would have? (Yvonne)

kanon: I think I probably would draw manga.

What's your cell's current ring tone? (Roxani)

Teruki: Brrr! Brrrr! My cell phone just vibrates (laughs).
Does anyone have a song as a ring tone?
Miku: Yeah, me! I've divided everyone into different groups on my phone, and whenever a member of An Cafe calls me, Ryuusei Rocket starts to play.

Do you have favourite movies? (Anne-Kathrin)

Miku: I like I am Sam. This movie is really beautiful.
Yu-ki: Spiderman (laughs)!

Which music do you like? (Katharina)

Yu-ki: I like calm music. I prefer ballads.
takuya: I listen to everything that sounds good.
kanon: Trance.
Miku: Usually I listen to pop charts, I always check the top ten.
Teruki: My favourite band is called Janne Da Arc, but when I'm tired and go to bed I like calm music, for example Enya.

What would you do if you could be the world's presidents? (Roxani)

Yu-ki: I would improve the world.
takuya: I wouldn't do anything.
kanon: (He thinks for a long while) Well, I think I would improve the world for myself, so that I could live out my hobbies.
Miku: I would pass a new law, a law that says that one man is allowed to have many women (laughs)!
Teruki: I don't think that I would be able to do something like that, to the world.

Is there any person from the past you would like to meet? (Nora)

Miku: I'd like to meet Einstein!
And why?
Miku: Well, I'd like to find out what was his secret. I mean, how is it possible that someone who is really pretty birdbrained becomes a genius like him?
kanon: Randy Rhoads, because he was a great guitarist.
Teruki: John Bonham, because I admired him as a drummer!

If each of you had the chance to fulfill a wish, what would it be? (Nora)

Yu-ki: Satisfaction.
takuya: A new guitar! (Everyone laughs)
kanon: Well, I guess I'd wish for a fortunate life. Oh, and next to that I'd wish for a life without work, so that I could laze around forever.
Miku: Um, my desire is a little bit different, I'd like to be a teenager again and visit High School.
Why?
Miku: You know, at that time I had lots of fun. I kept this time in my heart somehow, but nevertheless it's a thing of the past, it's over. I really would like to go back.
Teruki: I'd wish for more stamina, I'd wish for a body that's in good condition. I'm always very tired...

Thank you for this interview! Do you have a last message to our readers?

Teruki: Today we play the fifth show of this tour. We feel very comfortable in Germany and are grateful to our fans, since we came so far just because of them. We are very happy.
Miku: We are glad, that there are so many Cafekko's in this world! In fact we thought we just had fans in Japan, but we were wrong, because we were cordially received overseas. I want to visit every place where Cafekko's exist!
kanon: Please remain true to us from now on. I hope that our fans will always stay at our side.
takuya: I agree with kanon. Please remain with me!
Yu-ki: This tour is very important for me. Actually, I already performed in Germany with An Cafe last year, but this is my first overseas tour with this band. This means a lot to me and I hope that I can gain experience and nice memories.

JaME would like to thank Gan-Shin, Twisted Talent and of course An Cafe, who made this interview possible. We especially want to thank our readers, because you sent us so many questions for this interview and we got lots of posivite feedback.

An Cafe released their highly anticipated album PARALLEL WORLD BB on September 9. The album maintains this impression conventional pop and contains eleven songs of all kinds (more varied than before). What's more, the limited first edition includes 4 video clips one of which is her latest single Natsu Natsu KOI ★ GAME. I explain the whole story through interviews in which members have given us their opinion about songs.

Your last job, PARALLEL WORLD BB is a very colorful album. When you started to do so, did you and some concept of what would be?

Miku: We do not believe that this time the dance is the main element of this album. What we wanted was to get a mix of jobs. So we were selecting songs and we were going to give color to each. We had more meetings than normal to select, we had 30 songs, and then even more. So we finished the songs on the album were chosen from a much longer list.

Has anything changed in the production process?

Teruki: We usually work with a handler only when we recorded the singles, but this time the manipulator has helped us with all the songs on the album. The quality and the environment in which we recorded the songs were different. We had a great experience.

How each member and I thought that was your objective in creating this album?

Miku: We have released many albums before, and I just thought I wanted to do the best in a long time.

What was the key?

Miku: I think the songs. The singles are usually selected primarily from among the dance rock, but this time we have chosen under terms much broader.

Yes, all the melodies are impressive.

Teruki: regarding my battery, I thought a bit about the harshness of the sound and feeling that lies beneath the indie visual kei, and I gave it my best on drums with all that in mind.

"This time, too, have practiced on your own before you start recording?

Teruki: This time we could not practice much because of time. There were songs we recorded right after the pre-production. Basically, as was memorizing the songs was also arranging and playing them (laughs). I know it's important to practice before recording, but it was a good recording. We learned to adapt there and at the time.

kanon: This time, I wanted to work in particular with the arrangements. This year, especially with the verses, I've been using my computer. As I am the bass, my preferences go out alone on music naturally, but when I look at the notes in general is good to be able to say things like "I can also do this." And then think of other verses is more fun than before.

But when you play, is not it hard?

kanon: Yes, sometimes (laughs). But it's like when I started playing bass. It was fun, had to copy what came out on the computer and check the result later, almost like when I was a student.

takuya: This time I've been playing guitar since the objective standpoint of a creator, not just a guitarist.

You mean you've taken account of other instruments too?

takuya: Yes. If you only think of the guitar was just adding more and more sound then try to adapt to the others, or play much higher parts of the song on my guitar should highlight. Being able to do that, I was able to see more things for myself, and from different viewpoints.

And your Yuuki?

Teruki: I think this time on what has worked most Yuuki has been in the chorus, right?

Yuki: Oh, the choruses have been fun.

I heard that Yuuki, among all the members who play an instrument, it makes the least mistakes ...

Teruki: We do not know whether or not to choose the final version, but Yuuki has recorded the single lot.

kanon: There was a version in which normal singing, another in which it falsetto voice, one in which she sang with a higher octave and a version in mime. (Everyone starts to laugh nonstop)

Teruki: The handler said "a version of best fit Porno Graffiti" (laughs). But he also said "I am unwilling to use a version of Keisuke Kuwata (They all start laughing).
